Accreditation, gradings and accommodation charter

Make sure your accommodation business is signed up to the White Cliffs Country Accommodation Charter

Quality accommodation is a very important part of the visitor experience in White Cliffs Country. In recognition of this and for the benefit of our visitors, all properties marketed through our Visitor Information Centre and White Cliffs Country website have to be either assessed and graded by an approved national scheme such as VisitEngland and AA or be part of an independent external assessment such as one of the following:

  • Alistair Sawday Guide
  • Kent Accommodation Scheme
  • Michelin Guide
  • Good Hotel Guide
  • Externally managed standards audit system like Abode Hotels

Both VisitEngland and the AA assess accommodation to the same standards and award one to five stars.  The star ratings reflect the overall quality of the experience (see more information on accommodation star ratings and awards).  In addition to these ratings some schemes give supplementary Silver or Gold awards to further recognise excellence.  To find out more about these schemes contact:

In addition to the above schemes, and in order to ensure quality is maintained by our local accommodation businesses and recognised by our visitors, Dover District Council has developed an ‘Accommodation Charter.’ Any non‐accredited district wide accommodation businesses can sign up to the Charter as a requirement to being promoted on the White Cliffs Country website and other potential promotional activities (advertising and PR activity) undertaken by us and partners like Visit Kent and Tourism South East. The Charter also enables the districts Visitor Information Centre’s to make bookings through you on behalf of their visitors. The Charter covers important areas such as legal considerations, health and safety and good customer care practice.  There is also a complaints procedure which, together with the Charter, will provide a feedback mechanism for visitors who may be unhappy with their chosen accommodation.
