Richborough Roman Fort

Please note: Richborough Roman Fort is closed until summer 2022 whilst work is undertaken to deliver the Richborough: Gateway to Britannia project.

Richborough Roman Fort and Amphitheatre is an English Heritage site sited amid the East Kent marshes. It is perhaps the most symbolically important of all Roman sites in Britain, witnessing both the beginning and almost the end of Roman rule here.

The impressive ruins of the Roman Township at Richborough mark the point from which the Romans launched their successful invasion of Britain in AD 43.

Extensive remains of the walls and defensive ditches can be seen.

Explore the huge stone walls which mark the site of this Saxon Shore fortress and take a look at the fascinating museum. Catch a boat from Sandwich and reach the fort as the Romans would have done.
